Lamborghini develops V12 supercapacitor hybrid system

Italian OEM has unveiled its limited series hybrid supercar, the Sián. Equipped with the brand’s renowned V12 engine and a supercapacitor hybrid system, the Sián will develop 830ps total peak power.

The powertrain at the heart of the Sián features a 48V volt e-motor, delivering 34 hp, which has been incorporated into the gearbox to provide immediate response and improved performance. The e-motor also supports low-speed maneuvers with electric power.

Rather than use a lithium-ion battery, Lamborghin chose to us a supercapacitor. A technology originally pioneered the Lamborghini Aventador, the supercapacitor was developed to store ten times the power.

The result is electric system that is three times more powerful than a battery of the same weight and three times lighter than a battery producing the same power. Located in the bulkhead between cockpit and engine it ensures perfect weight distribution.

Combined, the supercapacitor and e-motor weighs just 34kg. Symmetric power flow ensures the same efficiency in both charging and discharging cycles. Thanks to the symmetric behavior, the supercapacitor can be charged and discharged with the same power.

This advanced technology is paired with Lamborghini’s V12 engine, which incorporates titanium intake valves and is uprated to 795ps at 8,500rpm. The highest output ever from a Lamborghini power plant. Pushing the Sián to a top speed of over 350 km/h.

“Lamborghini’s strategic heritage in one-off and very limited series cars is not only a commitment to exclusivity but a presentation of future designs and technologies,” said Maurizio Reggiani, chief technical officer at Lamborghini.

“With this car, we set ourselves the challenge of creating the best hybrid solution for a Lamborghini super sports car to provide us with the first step on our electrification strategy,”
