Ford develops new generation hybrid powertrain for Mondeo

Ford has announced that it will introduce a new hybrid powertrain to its Mondeo. Available in both wagon and 4-door coupe body style, the self-charging hybrid system is capable of pure electric driving and offers silent key start capability.

The hybrid powertrain – which combines a specially-developed 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle gasoline engine with an electric motor; generator; 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery; and a Ford-developed power-split automatic transmission – promises to deliver 187ps and offers regenerative braking technology that captures up to 90% of the energy normally lost during braking.

As well as the new hybrid powertrain, the OEM’s updated Mondeo will also be available with a 2.0-liter EcoBlue diesel engine. Available in two power outputs, 150ps and 190ps, the 2.0-liter unit features an integrated intake system with mirror-image porting for optimized engine breathing; a low-inertia turbocharger that enhances low-end torque; and a high-pressure fuel injection system that is more responsive, quieter and offers more precise fuel delivery than the outgoing 2.0-liter TDCi engines.

Additionally, Ford’s eight-speed automatic transmission – offered with 150ps and 190ps 2.0-liter EcoBlue engines – has been engineered to further optimize fuel efficiency and deliver responsive performance and smooth, swift gearshifts. A 6-speed manual transmission also is offered.

Ford’s 165ps 1.5-liter EcoBoost petrol engine remains available, delivering 150g/km CO₂ emissions supported by integrated exhaust manifold and water-cooled intake charge cooler technologies.
