Yasa achieves “unofficial world record” for electric motor power density

Yasa has achieved what it states is the highest power density ever recorded for an electric motor, across any sector or application.

In real-world test trials, Yasa’s prototype motor delivered 550kW of power from a 13.1kg package, equating to 42kW/kg, almost double the previous industry benchmark.

“Last week at Yasa, we believe we unofficially (and a little accidentally!) achieved the highest power density ever recorded for an electric motor in its class (and possibly for any motor),” said Yasa CTO Tim Woolmer in a LinkedIn post on Thursday, July 17.

The milestone was achieved without the use of exotic materials; no cobalt-iron laminations, Litz wire or 3D printing were used. The test saw high-standard thermal performance with a sustained power output. The electric motor has also been designed with mass production potential, which, Yasa says, is scalable to 10,000-50,000 units per year at a viable cost.

The test was completed on a standard rig, and Yasa has said it is preparing for further validation, on a full-capacity dyno, later this year.

In related news, Ultium Cells has entered into a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution to upgrade its Spring Hill, Tennessee, battery cell manufacturing facility to scale production of low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, building on a $2.3 billion investment announced in 2021
