Volkswagen has expanded its natural gas powertrain line-up strategy with the Golf Variant TGI. The new model now boasts three natural gas tanks, increasing range capability to 440km with natural gas alone.
The additional tank increases the range in natural gas mode by up to 80km compared to its predecessor, while underfloor storage of the tanks maintains cabin space. The German OEM has also introduced an upgrade 1.5-liter engine that will output 131ps and 200Nm of torque.
Volkswagen’s upgraded engine is primarily powered with CNG, while a 9-liter gasoline tank serves as a backup. Thanks to a TGI Miller combustion process and the variable turbine geometry of the turbocharger, the four-cylinder gasoline engine is designed with efficiency and responsiveness in mind.
The three natural gas tanks have a combined volume of 115 liters, which corresponds to a total weight of 17.3kg. The tanks are made from carbon fiber-reinforced plastic or from metal.
