German OEM Volkswagen has debuted its latest Golf. Built on an evolution of the brand’s MQB platform, the hatchback has been equipped with five different hybrid drives, two of which are plug-in.
“This car is completely new. But of course, a Golf always remains a Golf because the underlying concept is timeless,” said Ralf Brandstätter, COO for Volkswagen Passenger Cars. “This car has defined our brand over decades. The Golf has consistently made new technologies available for everyone.”
The latest Golf generation will launch with a choice of three eTSI 48V mild-hybrid systems. Equipped with a belt starter generator, 48V lithium-ion battery and the brand’s TSI engines, the eTSI Golf’s will come in 110ps, 130ps and 150ps variants.
Volkswagen’s two plug-in hybrid drives come in the form of an efficiency-focused 204ps powertrain, and a 245ps GTE powertrain. Both PHEV cars will launch with a 13kWh lithium-ion battery that enables range of approximately 60km (37 miles).
The drive options for the new Golf also include gasoline (TSI), diesel (TDI) and natural gas drive (TGI). The two four-cylinder gasoline engines will produce either 90ps or 110ps, while the two four-cylinder diesels will generate either 115ps or 150ps. The TGI engine will develop peak power of 130ps.
Thanks to the use of a Miller combustion process, the TSI engines offer low consumption and emissions. For the TDI powertrains, Volkswagen will apply twin-dosing technology to reduce NOX by up to 80%.
