Mercedes-Benz has announced that the SLC 180 AMG Line has been added to the UK’s SLC range, introducing an entry-level model that will compete against Mazda’s MX5 and other rivals.

The SLC 180 features a turbo-charged 1.6-liter petrol engine producing 156hp and 250Nm. An inline four, the SLC180’s engine forms part of the M274 family. As a result, the 180 shares the same third-generation 200-bar, direct-injection system with spray-guided combustion and 83.0mm bore of its larger siblings. A reduction in stroke to just 73.7mm facilitates the reduction in swept capacity to 1595cc.

Other technologies implimented on the 180 engine include the use of Piezo injectors, which enable optimal mixture formation with up to five injections per power stroke. A higher compression ratio of 10.3:1 (up from 9.8:1 in the SLC200) rounds out the significant differences between the family units.

The 180 is said to be able to accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 7.9s, and has a top speed of 140mph. In addition to this, the car emits 134 g/km of CO2 and can deliver up to 48.7mpg on the combined cycle. The car is supplied with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, or customers can opt for a 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
