Following the conclusion of the latest World Motor Sport Council meeting, the FIA says it has validated a framework for the 2026 F1 powertrain regulations.
Key to the new rules will be the ability to convey an environmentally sustainable message via the use of renewable fuels, high overall efficiency and a shift in focus from IC engine to electrical power.
This will be coupled with a focus on further cost reductions via the technical, operational and financial regulations. This will allow existing participants to continue in the knowledge that costs are contained, and the FIA also hopes to attract new entrants. The council also stated that high RPM will be a requirement for the IC engines, in order to improve the aural appeal of the cars for fans.
To this end, the 2026 Power Unit Regulations will be based on four pillars:
- Retain the 1.6-liter V6 engine;
- Increase electrical power to 350kW;
- Eliminate the MGU-H;
- Introduction of a Power Unit cost cap.
The FIA stated that a detailed document of the 2026 regulations will be developed and submitted to the World Motor Sport Council in early 2022.
