First plug-in hybrid for Skoda RS

For the first time, a Škoda RS model will feature a plug-in hybrid variant. The Octavia RS iV will have a 1.4-liter TSI gasoline powertrain outputting 150PS and an 85kW electric motor. The pair will deliver a combined 245ps.

Teamed to the electric motor is a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 13kWh, capable of carrying the vehicle 60km (37 miles) in a fully electric mode. And 330Nm of torque can be provided instantaneously by the battery-powered motor, enabling a 0-100km/h time of 7.3 seconds, and a top speed of 225km/h (140mph). A 6-speed shift-by-wire DSG transmission will drive power to the front wheels, enabling a maximum torque figure of 400Nm.

Škoda will also offer a further three electrified variants of the vehicle. The Octavia RS features the same powertrain as the RS model, but with slightly lower output levels; 204PS and 350Nm of torque. Alongside this, two e-TEC engine versions make routes into production and will be the brand’s first to feature mild hybrid technology.

The technology uses recovered energy from braking scenarios to support the 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI (110PS) or four-cylinder 1.5-liter TSI (150PS) with an electrical boost of up to 50Nm and depending on operating conditions can completely shut off the combustion engine, allowing the vehicle to coast. When power is required again, the powertrain starts rapidly by way of a belt driven 48V starter-motor. In addition to this, a 0.6kWh capacity 48V battery situated under the front seat can charge the regular 12V battery using a DC/DC converter. The technology will allow for savings up to 0.4-liters of fuel per 100km, Škoda says.

Board member for technical development, Christian Strube, said, “We are using plug-in-hybrid drive in a sporty top-of-the-range mode for the first time. This both increases performance and reduces fuel consumption, as well as CO2 emissions.”
