Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has announced the arrival of its diesel Mazda CX-5 in the USA. The 2019 SUV will feature the OEM’s Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine.
“As Mazda continues our climb toward premium, we will offer more powertrain choices that premium customers expect,” said Jeffrey Guyton, MNAO president. “I am happy to share that Mazda’s Skyactiv-D 2.2-liter diesel engine is joining the US powertrain line-up with our debut model, the 2019 CX-5.”
With the addition of the Skyactiv-D powerplant to the CX-5 line-up, the Japanese OEM is aiming to address ongoing demand for premium diesel SUV. The 2.2-liter unit offers high torque and revs freely at high RPMs.
A sequential twin turbocharger helps to deliver a smooth and linear response from low to high engine speeds, and notably increases both low- and high-end torque up to the 5,500rpm rev limit.
The unit is estimated to deliver 170ps at 4,000rpm and 393Nm of torque at 2,000rpm with an EPA estimated 10.4l/100km on city, 9.4l/100km on highway and 10l/100km overall.
Mazda also worked closely with federal and state agencies, such as the California Air Resources Board (CARB), to ensure that the Skyactiv-D engine meets the required emission standards and passes all appropriate regulations.
