Detroit Diesel Corporation – a subsidiary of Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) – has added a six-cylinder unit to its engine line-up. The Detroit DD8 will be produced in the components plant in Detroit, USA, and will power medium-duty trucks.
The 7.7-liter engine produces between 260 and 350ps and puts Daimler ahead of its competition in the rollout of its global platform strategy for drivetrains. Over the last four years, Daimler Trucks has invested more than US$350m in the renewal of its engine portfolio in North America.
The OEM introduced its heavy-duty-truck engine platform in 2007 and in 2013 medium-duty engines were added to the strategy. As part of the integrated drivetrain by Detroit, the engine offers higher efficiency and lower maintenance costs. This has led to 95% of Freightliner and Western Star customers choosing trucks powered by Detroit engines.
