The BMW Group has announced that the company’s plan to expand production capacity at its Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing, Germany, will now take place earlier than originally planned.
Due to growing demand for electrified vehicles, the plant expects the number of modules needed for production of high-voltage batteries to double this year. The number of e-motors required is also expected to increase significantly.
Michael Nikolaides, head of production engines and e-drives at BMW, said, “We are embarking on a massive expansion of our Competence Centre for E-Drive Production from 8,000m2 currently to 80,000m2 in future.
The Dingolfing site, where the company produces its powertrain components for fully and partially electric models, will also see an increase in staff. BMW has pledged to increase its e-drive production staff from 600 to more than 1,400 by the end of the year.
In the medium term, BMW expects to have 2,000 staff members working on e-motors, battery modules and high-voltage batteries at the site in Lower Bavaria.
In addition, preparations are underway for production of fifth generation e-motors and batteries at the site with production slated to start later this year.
