UL certifies Lumen’s wireless charging system

Lumen Group has received UL 2750 certification for its Freedom wireless power transfer system – the first organization to do so.

The certification from safety science company UL covers wireless power transfer equipment including the power source for wireless power transfer, a ground assembly and the mating vehicle assembly.

Wireless power transfer is a way of transferring power to an electric vehicle using resonant inductive magnetic coupling between the ground pad and receiving pad attached to the vehicle and does not require physical contact or wires. The technology can replace charging with a cord. To charge the vehicle, the driver parks in a location near the wireless system without any contact with the equipment.

Joseph Bablo, principal engineer manager for energy systems and e-mobility at UL, said, “With EV sales expected to exceed gas-powered vehicle sales by 2030, the demand for revolutionary technologies that can be used to charge electric vehicle batteries, such as wireless power transfer systems, will continue to grow.”

The equipment is designed to have a maximum rated input voltage to the power source of 600V AC, 50 or 60Hz.
