Equipped with a 3-liter V6 unit and a 100kW electric engine, the 468ps plug-in SUV represents the next step in the German auto maker’s journey toward e-mobility

Porsche has introduced an all-new PHEV powertrain to its Cayenne SUV. Developed as part of the company’s move toward greater electrification, the third Porsche hybrid powertrain introduced since 2017 combines a six-cylinder IC engine and a 100kW electric engine to generate a total system power of 468ps and 700Nm maximum torque that is readily available just above idling speed.

This means the plug-in hybrid drive will accelerate from 0km/h to 100km/h in 5.0 seconds and will reach a top speed of 253km/h. Average fuel consumption on the NEDC is expected to reach a combined 3.2 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 72g/km and energy consumption of 20.6 kWh/100 km.

While the performance of the combustion engine moderately improves on its predecessor by just 7ps, the performance of the electric engine is now 43% higher at 100kW.

As first featured in the 918 Spyder, the SUV will also include Porsche’s innovative boost strategy. This ensures that the electric engine can be used in all the standard Sport Chrono Package’s driving modes for an additional performance boost.

This means the maximum system torque becomes available as you press the accelerator pedal. Depending on the driving situation and performance requirements, drivers can continue to draw on the boost torque across the entire range of speeds.

Battery capacity has also improved in the E-Hybrid, in comparison to the previous model, capacity has increased from 10.8 to 14.1 kW/h.

The fluid-cooled battery, stored beneath the loading floor in the rear of the car, consists of eight cell modules with 13 prismatic lithium ion cells each. With a 230V 10A connection the high-voltage battery will reach full charge within seven hours. And when fitted with the optional 7.2kW onboard charger and a 230V connection with 32A, the battery can be filled within 2.3 hours.

Porsche has also redesigned the Cayenne E-Hybrid’s drivetrain. The hybrid module consists of a highly-integrated combination of electric engine and separating clutch. In contrast to the previous electro-hydraulic system with the spindle actuator, the separating clutch is operated electromechanically, which ensures faster reaction times.

The transmission acquires the new Tiptronic S. Newly developed for the entire Cayenne range with eight speeds, the automatic gearbox offers a smoother start as well as significantly speeding up switching. Interruption of tractive force during switching processes has also been reduced.
