JLR equips Range Rover Sport with 48V straight-six powertrain

Jaguar Land Rover has announced that it has expanded its Range Rover Sport powertrain range with the OEM’s latest 3-liter in-line six-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine. The six-cylinder unit is paired with a 48V battery and an e-motor.

With the introduction of an electric supercharger that delivers immediate boost by spooling in 0.5s up to 65000rpm, the 400ps Ingenium engine looks to eliminate turbo lag through coordination between electric supercharger and twin-scroll turbocharger.

In addition, the unit’s twin-scroll turbocharger – alongside continuous variable valve lift – boosts power by helping the new engine breathe with maximum efficiency, therefore improving performance and fuel economy, while reducing emissions.

“Traditional Range Rover strengths have been heightened with the introduction of the latest 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine,” said Nick Rogers, executive director of product engineering, Jaguar Land Rover. Advanced technologies, such as continuous variable valve lift, work alongside a mild-hybrid system that harvests energy as you drive, to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

“The otherwise wasted energy is used to power the electric supercharger, which enhances vehicle capability by enhancing the torque curve at low engine speeds for greater responses. Superior comfort is achieved thanks to the natural mass balance of the engine, which allows it to run more smoothly.”

These features aim to bring enhanced efficiency to the Ranger Rover Sport line-up, with fuel economy of 9.3l/100km (30.4mpg) and CO₂ emissions of 212g/km (NEDC equivalent combined).
