Ford Focus 2019 gets new 1.5-liter EcoBoost and EcoBlue engines

Designed from a clean sheet of paper, Ford’s fourth-generation Focus with 1.5-liter EcoBoost engine promises performance and efficiency thanks to cylinder-deactivation and a combination of port and direct fuel injection

Ford has unveiled its all-new Focus. Available with a range of Ford EcoBoost gasoline and Ford EcoBlue diesel engines, the hatchback promises to deliver optimized power and refinement while meeting the latest stringent Euro 6 emissions standards.

Bolted to either a six-speed manual and new eight-speed automatic transmission, the heavily redeveloped 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost unit with either 150ps or 182ps features an industry-first cylinder deactivation system. This means one of the engine’s cylinders can be stopped when full capacity is not needed. The technology can disengage or re-engage one cylinder in 14 milliseconds.

Developed from all-aluminum for reduced weight, the unit has a low-friction architecture that delivers naturally high torque at low RPM. An integrated exhaust manifold improves fuel efficiency by helping the engine reach optimal temperatures faster, as well as delivering torque more rapidly by minimizing the distance exhaust gasses travel between cylinders and turbocharger. The company’s newest gasoline powerplant is expected to produce CO₂ emissions of 122 g/km for the five-door model.

As well as the EcoBoost, the American auto maker has developed a new turbocharged diesel engine. Designed to deliver higher power, more torque at low rpm, and enhanced fuel efficiency and refinement for higher-mileage drivers, the new 1.5-liter EcoBlue powertrain is offered with 95ps or 120ps. Both variants deliver 300Nm of torque and anticipated CO₂ emissions of 91g/km.

To achieve this, the unit features technologies such as low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation combined with water-air charge cooling; an integrated intake manifold for optimized engine breathing; low-inertia turbocharging for faster, more controllable turbo response; and a high-pressure fuel injection system that is more responsive, quieter, and has more precise fuel delivery.

As well as the new additions to the engine line-up, Ford is sticking to its trusted formula. Also offering the 1.0-liter EcoBoost. Either in 85ps, 100ps or 125ps, core EcoBoost technologies include advanced turbocharging, high-pressure direct fuel injection and Twin-independent Variable Cam Timing.
