BMW has announced that its new M8 BMW M8 Competition will be equipped with a high-revving V8 unit. Developing 633ps, the 4.4-liter engine is most powerful ever developed for a BMW M car.
The powerplant works alongside two turbochargers – positioned in the ‘V’ between the cylinder banks for greater efficiency – and features indirect charge air cooling. In the M8 Competition, peak torque of 750Nm is delivered at 5,800rpm.
BMW has also used a special engine mounting to ensure a more rigid connection with the vehicle structure. This results in more direct engine response and immediate transmission of power to the drivetrain.
The eight-cylinder powerplant – which is also fitted with cross-bank exhaust manifolds; increased pressure direct injection; and performance-focused oil supply and cooling systems – has been paired with the brand’s 8-speed M Steptronic transmission.
This means the M8 Competition will sprint from 0-100km/h in 3.2 seconds and from 0-200km/h in 10.6 seconds. The coupe is electronically limited to 250km/h. Average fuel consumption promises to be between 8.8l/100km and 8.7l/100km, with CO₂ emissions of 242g/km.
