Launched at the end of 2023, the retrofit kit replaces the original two-valve-per-cylinder layout of the M64 air-cooled flat-six with a four-valve architecture, improving airflow and combustion efficiency. The upgrade enables engines to rev up to 12,000rpm and also increases power and torque, with a weight reduction of 3.5kg compared with the standard configuration.

The cylinder heads are cast in the UK using aerospace-grade A356 aluminum CNC-machined in-house at Swindon Powertrain’s Wiltshire facility in the UK. Kits have been supplied to engine builders and specialists globally, including in Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia, for road and track applications.

“Relying on low-flow, two-valve-per-cylinder architectures, the M64 air-cooled engines typically have restricted air flow into the combustion chamber, while the need for heavier springs stresses the rockers and limits RPM,” explained Sylvain Rubio, technical director at Swindon Powertrain. “Our M64 cylinder head kit is helping deliver more power and performance to a new generation of upgraded Porsche 964 and 993 models, benefitting from the latest materials and the finest of CNC machining tolerances.”

The 24-valve design increases peak airflow by around 40% compared with the standard 993 configuration. The kit includes titanium inlet and exhaust valves, along with associated valvetrain components such as springs, caps, collets, shims, finger followers and shafts, as well as camshafts, cam covers and timing drive input.

Among adopters is UK-based Thornley Kelham, which is using the cylinder heads in its limited-edition European RS model. The program will produce 15 vehicles, with customers offered either a 3.6-liter engine delivering more than 380bhp and 290 lb-ft of torque with a 10,000rpm limit, or a 4.0-liter unit producing over 425bhp and 325 lb-ft with a 9,000rpm limit.

“We’re proud to be helping so many engine builders and 911 enthusiasts around the world unlock substantial extra power and torque to create truly standout builds with this high-revving upgrade,” added Raphaël Caillé, managing director at Swindon Powertrain. “Pushing the boundaries of engineering – often beyond what seems conceivable – is a challenge we thrive on. We’re never content to stand still.”

The company is developing other high-performance concepts, including a flat-eight engine. In late 2025, Runge Cars confirmed that it is working with Swindon Powertrain on a 5.3-liter, 32-valve, air-cooled unit.

As the automotive industry advances toward a future defined by electrification, hybrid systems and alternative fuels, one technology continues to demonstrate its essential value: gasoline injection. In a mobility landscape where electric, hybrid, hydrogen and advanced combustion engines will coexist, cutting-edge gasoline injection systems remain a cornerstone of efficiency and emission reduction.

Over the past decades, fuel injection technology has revolutionized engine performance and environmental impact. The transition from carburetors to electronically controlled injection systems marked a dramatic step forward, reducing CO and HC emissions by orders of magnitude and significantly lowering NOx. Today’s advanced injectors, capable of delivering precisely metered and finely atomized fuel either into the intake manifold or directly into the combustion chamber, ensure optimal air-fuel mixing and cleaner, more efficient combustion. The result is lower fuel consumption, reduced emissions and enhanced engine responsiveness.

In hybrid vehicles in particular, gasoline injection technology plays a decisive role. By operating the internal combustion engine within highly efficient load ranges, hybrid architectures maximize the benefits of high-precision injection systems. This synergy translates into measurable gains in fuel economy and substantial reductions in harmful emissions, supporting increasingly stringent global regulations without compromising performance or driving pleasure.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="wp-image-24115 size-large" src="https://www.automotivepowertraintechnologyinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Dumarey_Injector-560x382.jpg" alt="A Dumarey fuel injector on a grey background. Using Conflux’s configurable core platform, the transmission cooler was adapted to the programme’s specific boundary conditions and produced in just two weeks using metal additive manufacturing.

Multimatic Motorsports selected and integrated the unit for an endurance application, without the cost and delay of a clean-sheet design. The Conflux oil cooler used engine coolant to manage gearbox oil temperatures within a shared water circuit. In this endurance application, it delivered approximately 20% higher heat rejection than the incumbent solution within the same packaging envelope, providing additional thermal headroom without extra space, weight or aero penalty.

“Endurance racing is the ultimate test for any cooling system,” said Glenn Rees, principal engineer at Conflux Technology. “We’ve shown that our configurable, 3D-printed technology can move from design to race car in weeks, deliver significantly improved performance, and still be trusted to reach the finish line in some of the world’s toughest races.”

The 3D-printed core incorporates highly optimized internal channels to increase heat transfer while controlling pressure drop within a compact, lightweight envelope. Conflux’s configurable design platform enables engineers to rapidly tune geometry for different gearboxes, layouts and duty cycles, reducing non-recurring engineering costs and shortening program time-to-track, without compromising durability or consistency over long stints.

“At Multimatic, we look for partners who can combine innovation with robust delivery,” added Julian Sole, design manager at Multimatic Motorsports. “The Conflux oil cooler, built from their configurable design and packaged efficiently in a very tight space, delivered the reliability we required over a full endurance race distance.”

The same configurable oil cooler architecture is available to other OEMs and race operations seeking a step change in thermal capacity and packaging without a complete cooling-system redesign.

The company is developing and supplying key components for the GEN3 Toyota GR Supra, with final assembly and servicing carried out by Walkinshaw TWG Racing. The five-year program, first announced a year ago, is expected to place at least five Toyota-powered cars on the grid in 2026.

Close collaboration

Swindon Powertrain has been working in close collaboration with homologation partner Walkinshaw TWG Racing to lead the development, simulation and production of development engines and key parts such as the crank train. Final assembly and ongoing servicing of the race engines will be undertaken by Walkinshaw TWG Racing at its facility in Clayton, Victoria.

Toyota’s all-aluminium, quad-cam 2UR-GSE V8, known for smooth performance in vehicles like the Lexus LC500, has been adapted to a 5.2L version for the Supercars series, which requires engines between 5.0–5.7L. “The engine’s architecture, such as its square 94×94 (bore and stroke), offers a great base for a competitive and durable power unit to achieve 600bhp,” said Swindon Powertrain’s managing director, Raphaël Caillé.

Balancing durability, cost and performance

Swindon Powertrain GR Supra engine

Key to the project is balancing durability, performance and cost attributes. “The Supercars calendar, including supporting the Australian F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, sees over 12,000km of track running – that’s around five times the mileage of the 30-round British Touring Car Championship and harsher when you consider events such as the Bathurst 1000 with its 1.19-mile straight,” added Caillé.

To balance durability and strict cost targets, Swindon Powertrain focused on evolving the cranktrain, valvetrain and combustion systems. The strength of Toyota’s production engines allowed cost-effective original equipment (OE) parts—such as the cylinder head, block, main caps, timing chain and followers—to be retained. The 2026 unit also features hydraulic variable valve timing (VVT) and a 3D-printed inlet tract, a technology previously used on Swindon Powertrain’s BTCC-winning engines.

The challenge

With Swindon Powertrain’s ISO 9001-certified facilities located in the UK and France, its engineering team – headed by technical director Sylvain Rubio– worked closely with the project partners. “It’s been a fantastic collaboration: the time zone difference enabled us to work around the clock, in effect,” added Caillé. “However, we don’t underestimate the challenge. Supercars is a competitive championship with established engine producers with experience of the GEN3 regulations.
