The 2.2 is intended to complement, not replace, the company’s existing 2-liter Multijet diesel engine and in the Cherokee will be available only with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive.
The four-cylinder Euro 6-compliant engine comes in two states of tune, producing 188ps and 203ps, both versions with 440Nm of peak torque. The new Multijet takes the Cherokee to 100km/h two seconds quicker than the existing 2-liter, but with the same level of fuel consumption.
The powertrain features an optimized exhaust gas treatment system, consisting of a close couple DPF with NOx storage converter positioned in the engine compartment operating together with the EGR control system.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) says that the 16-valve twin camshaft aluminum head has been designed to withstand the increased working pressure of the common rail with injection rate shaping, which operates at 2,000 bar. The design of the pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft is also optimized to limit weight.
The shape of the combustion chamber and the reduced compression ratio guarantee low NOx polluting emissions and high performance, while the brand-new solenoid injectors atomize the fuel very finely, says the company, providing marked advantages in terms of quiet operation and fuel efficiency.
Further efficiency gains come from a novel variable geometry turbocharger integrated in the exhaust manifold, reducing engine weight and improving exhaust gas treatment system functionality. Other factors include the smart alternator and variable displacement oil pump and stop-start functionality as standard.
The new engine is being built in Fiat Chrysler’s Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy, and is also expected to feature in the powertrain line-up of Alfa Romeo’s new Giulia, which is to be officially revealed at the International Motor Show (IAA 2015) this September in Frankfurt, Germany.
