Volkswagen has revealed what it calls a “zero-emissions, avant-garde van” concept called BUDD-e at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The van is the first model to use the German manufacturer’s new modular electric platform (MEB), designed for plug-in EVs.
The BUDD-e has a range of up to 600km (373 miles) and Volkswagen says the 101kWh battery, which is flat to save space, can be charged up to 80% capacity in 30 minutes using a charging power of 150kW (DC). Power comes from two electric motors, producing 200Nm at the front and 290Nm at the rear.
While the BUDD-e itself is just a concept, it is said to be a strong preview of an all-electric MPV that Volkswagen plans to put into production in 2018 as part of a new range of EVs recently announced by VW CEO Matthias Mueller in response to the diesel emissions crisis that has damaged the company.
