Toyota’s new hydrogen fuel cell sedan has set a record zero-emission driving range in the official US combined city/highway driving calculations, achieving 3.5l/100km (80.5mpg) and an estimated driving range of 502km (312 miles) on a single tank.
The Japanese manufacturer says that the US Environmental Protection Agency’s rating confirms the Mirai’s status as the only zero-emission electric vehicle on the market capable of exceeding 300 miles (483km) on one fill.
The Mirai is the world’s first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell car, combining Toyota’s 114kW fuel cell stack with hybrid technology to offer all-round performance rivaling that on an internal combustion-engine car.
The Mirai went on sale in Japan last December, and is set to be launched in Europe and the USA later this year. The project is especially notable because of Toyota’s decision earlier this year to allow royalty-free use of its fuel cell patents by other manufacturers.
