SEAT has announced a US$3.7bn investment in equipment, facilities and R&D between 2015 and 2019.
The company’s executive committee president Jürgen Stackmann made the announcement during the 40th anniversary celebrations of the SEAT Technical Center, in Martorell, Spain, attended by the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.
Stackmann said the money would be earmarked for new vehicle development projects at the Technical Center as well as new equipment and facilities for the company’s Martorell factory near Barcelona.
Prime Minister Rajoy toured the site in a CNG-fuelled Leon development car, including the facilities where SEAT engineers contribute expertise to the development of the VW Group’s Ecomotive range of engines.
SEAT says that its technical centre will employ 1,000 engineers by the end of the year, following the recruitment of 100 new staff.
