New Delphi truck controllers release power for more powertrain integration

A new generation of powertrain and vehicle controllers has been developed by Delphi Automotive. These truck controllers are much faster and more powerful than the previous generation units, but with less board level complexity. Using multi-core processors and Delphi’s custom application specific integrated circuits (ASIC), they provide the power needed to take full advantage of the latest fuel injection and transmission technologies and provide full powertrain control integration where required.

“To enable maximum performance and calibration flexibility, the next generation of vehicle systems require a similarly advanced control system,” explains Delphi’s vice president powertrain and general manager fuel injection systems, Kerem Erman. “Our new family of controllers provide that speed and flexibility, making them a perfect partner for Delphi’s new closed-loop fuel injection system and for any other demanding engine and transmission application.”

This substantial advance has been achieved by integrating much of the controller’s functionality into Delphi-designed ASICs that release processing capacity for other tasks. Combining a pin count up to 300 with high-speed processing and up to 10MB of flash memory allows higher levels of powertrain control and integration, enabling improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions.

“We also have to be prepared for rapid growth in a wide range of vehicle functions that require integrated control, such as aftertreatment, mild-hybrid systems and automated safety systems leading to autonomous driving,” added Erman. “Our new controllers integrate the features including cyber security strategies that will allow vehicle manufacturers to prepare for these exciting new technologies.”

The new controllers include microprocessor RAM and high-frequency logging capabilities that will contribute to the elimination of development controllers, reducing risk, complexity and calibration effort.
