A team at Hyundai Motor America recently broke a land speed record. The run was conducted in a race-prepared Ioniq hybrid prototype, developed by Hyundai Motor America’s engineering and quality team. The FIA-approved production-based hybrid vehicle land speed record was achieved at 157.825mph, with a peak exit speed of 160.7mph on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats.
The development team made a number of modifications to the Ioniq hybrid prototype – to the vehicle’s aero, suspension and safety packages, as well as the powertrain.
Changes to the powertrain included the addition of low-restriction intake and exhaust systems with retained catalyst; recalibration of the engine, transmission, and hybrid ECU and removal of the governors; removal of the air conditioning and ancillary accessories; installation of express single-stage direct-port nitrous injection with a standalone cockpit-controlled fuel system.
