The General Motors engine factory in Flint, Michigan, USA, is celebrating the production of one million 1.4-liter engines.
The factory, which opened in 2002, celebrates the landmark as it makes a US$200m transition to production of a new global engine and stops making the 1.4-liter unit that has seen service in the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze.
The plant continues to build the 3.6-liter engine installed in the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, among other applications, and will begin assembly of GM’s new Ecotec modular engine before the end of the year, producing a 1.4-liter turbocharged version for the Chevrolet Cruze and a 1.5-liter version for the new Volt.
“Attaining one million engines produced is always an important milestone,” said Terri Burden, Flint Engine plant manager. “But this is particularly special because it comes as we prepare to launch an engine that will be a key part of GM’s global engine program for many years to come.”
