Federal-Mogul has revealed plans to increase production on its MicroTorq engine sealing products thanks to increased demand.
The company says that since its introduction in 2010, the elastomeric seals have been featured on or are in development on more than 14 engine programmes, including GM’s Ecotec range of small-displacement engines.
Federal-Mogul says that MicroTorq seals reduce friction losses by up to 80% and CO2 by up to 1.5g/km per engine thanks to a dual-hinge flex section that maintains uniform contact with the rotating shaft without creating high loads or jeopardizing reliability. The seals are also capable of handling increased crankcase pressure and vacuum requirements, which helps with further efficiencies and friction reduction elsewhere.
Annual production volume is planned to increased from two million units in 2015 to 10 million units by 2020, with plants in Mexico, Hungary and China taking on the extra capacity.
