BorgWarner has revealed the passing of a production milestone at its European facilities, with over five million DCT modules produced for Volkswagen’s DQ250 transmission.
The company has been producing the modules since 2003 for a range of cars within the Volkswagen Group’s brands, including the VW Golf, Skoda Octavia and Audi Q3.
BorgWarner says its DualTronic technology consists of a dual-clutch module manufactured in Arnstadt, Germany, and a control module produced in Tulle, France. The module uses two wet clutches in an oil bath to engage the odd and even gears, to allow shifts within fractions of a second with no perceptible interruption of the power flow.
The control module also uses compact electro-hydraulic solenoid valves to precisely regulate the clutch and the transmission’s gearshift actuation system. Tunable launch characteristics, high thermal robustness and scalable torque capacity have made it usable in a range of different applications.
