General Motors has revealed that it will invest US$44m in its Bowling Green, Kentucky, USA, assembly plant to support increased capacity in its Performance Build Center.
Construction and tool re-arrangement is scheduled to start in January 2016 on the facility where production of the company’s LT4 6.2-liter V8 engine for the Chevrolet Corvette Z06.
The Performance Build Center offers customers the chance to take part in the company’s Build Your Own Engine program, which sees customers helping GM engineers to assemble the 650ps supercharged LT4 engine for their cars.
The US$5,000 option package includes a full day with a Performance Build Center engine assembly technician who instructs and oversees the build, a personalized engine plaque identifying the customer and professional photography, an experience the company says is one-of-a-kind.
“Coupled with the investment, for US$439 million for a new paint shop and facility upgrades announced in May, GM has committed US$483 million to Bowling Green this year alone,” said plant manager Kai Spande. “These significant investments indicate the company’s confidence in Bowling Green, the Performance Build Center and our skilled workforce.”
